The main town and centre of Samui's trade, Nathon is home to
most of the island's local residents and the main departure point
for Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and Surat Thani. The beach is not really
attractive, but the small town where life goes on as it has always
done, is definitely worth a stop for a glimpse of local colour.
Visit the fresh market for a selection of some of the south's
exotic fruit and veggies, or simply sit in a cafe and watch the
ferries roll in.
Close to the town heading south is a spectacular viewpoint 467
metres high. If you feel confident in your driving skills, you
can try the 6-Kilometre drive to eat a simple lunch on a wooden
terrace overlooking Maenam and Bophut Bay. Weather permitting,
you'll also be treated to a wonderful view of Phangan Island.
The first five kilometres are nicely paved, but be aware that
the last kilometre is rather steep, slippery and dusty. It is
not recommended if it's raining. If you'd rather not drive yourself,
there are many tour companies next to the pier in Nathon Town
offering well-organized trips in Land Rovers with qualified drivers.
About 2 Km south of Nathon Town (before only one of two traffic
lights on the island) is a large road sign indicating the turn
off to Hin Lat Waterfall and a small temple. From the car park
you will have to walk about 3.5 Km to find the most interesting
part of the waterfall and a basin where you can take a cool, refreshing
swim (subject to water levels.)
Lipa
Noi Beach
The peaceful
beach of Lipa Noi
Continuing further south you'll come to yet another one of Samui's
great beaches, Lipa Noi. Found off the main road, it's a nice
place to take a break and have a swim or a drink. The beach is
also one of the best locations on the island from which to catch
a beautiful sunset. Especially on the weekends, the shallow waters
and white sands attract many local families and children. During
the week though, it's usually much quieter. A few bungalows and
a restaurant can be found close to the beach. There's not much
in the way of entertainment in the area but driving through the
coconut plantations will provide you with a pleasant and relaxing
sense of being in tropical paradise.
Taling
Ngam
Stunning
ocean vista
at Taling Ngam
Although it is difficult to access from the road and the coastline
is narrow, Taling Ngam boasts a beautiful and secluded beach.
The best spot in the area is coveted by the
Royal Meridien which has one of the most amazing ocean views
on the island. This 5-star resort is situated in a superb setting
with a one-of-a-kind pool looking out over the brilliant blue
seas of the Gulf of Thailand. If you need peace and quiet, and
that feeling of getting away from it all, you won't be disappointed
with Taling Ngam.
Also of interest in Taling Ngam is a small white temple named
Wat Kiri Wongkaram. At the temple you will find the mummified
remains of a Buddhist monk, Loung Por Ruam. The Wat is located
on the way to the main road from the beach, and the Elephant Gate
at the main intersection is not to be missed. (see temples)
Set on the unspoiled beach of Choeng Mon on the
Northeast coast of the island, just 4 kilometres
from the airport, the Imperial Boat House Hotel
comprises 34 authentic teakwood rice barges converted
into international standard luxury suites, as
well as eight low-rise accommodation wings.
