Patong Beach

Baan Rim Pa at Kalim Beach Road, far north end of Patong Beach. Tel: 340 789, serves Thai cuisine in the sophisticated ambiance of a verandahed traditional teakwood house overlooking the rocky shoreline. Bookings essential at this highly popular venue.

Karlsson's Restaurant is located in the center of Patong Beach, Phuket, only 100 meters from the beach. Open daily from 16.00 to midnight, serving great steaks and a wide selection of international dishes in generous proportions. A relaxed and friendly atmosphere and very reasonable prices.

Ristorante de Giorgio & Malee Seafood situated near Soi Bangla. (Tel: 341 193) is the place to enjoy authentic Italian and seafood cuisine right on the main beach road. Open daily 7am-midnight.

Royal Kitchen Chinese Restaurant at the Royal Paradise Hotel, Paradise Complex, Patong Beach. Tel: 340 666, serves excellent Cantonese food. No MSG used. Open daily, 11.30am-2.30pm; 6.30-11.30pm.

Sam's Steak and Salad Bar Holiday Inn, Patong Beach. Tel: 340 608 , is known around the island for its fine steaks, fresh salad bar and other tasty dishes. Great for lunch or an evening out. Open daily.

Sala Bua Restaurant Phuket Cabana, Patong Beach. Tel: 342 100, offering East-Meets-West cuisine and Thai food with panoramic views of the sea. Open daily from breakfast.

Pizzeria Napoli Soi Post Office, Beach Road. Tel: 340 674, serves pizza and good Italian dishes (homemade lasagna, cannelloni and tortellini pasta). Reasonable prices. Open daily 12.30-11.30pm.

Molly Malones along beach road in the heart of Patong, serves good pub fare for very reasonable prices. Good friendly service and great live performances by Irish bands nightly. For great Indian fare, try Navrang Mahal, 58/11 Bangla Road, Soi Patong (Tel: 292280). Serving a variety of curries, tandoors, nan and roti, including vegetarian dishes, this restaurant is great value and a fantastic alternative to Asian cuisine. Set menus allow you to sample a variety of things, or choose directly from the a la carte menu.

Ghadafi Halal Food Restaurant, at 178 Phrabaramee Rd, (opposite the Mosque when heading to Phuket Town), is a modest establishment serving Muslim, Thai and Indian foods all hours of the day. Don't go there for the decor, but do try the Indian style Biriyani Chicken.

Phuket Town

No matter where on the island you are staying, it's always worth a trip into Phuket Town to scout out some of the more interesting and less tourist oriented eateries to be found on the island.

Ka Jok Si, in Takuapah Road, Phuket Town, is worthwhile for the food - absolutely delicious, the setting-an old Chinese shop house decorated in a style that reflects the personality of its unique owner Khun Lek, and the exceptional service. Open for dinner only, Tuesday-Saturday Tel: 217 903.

Je t'aime 183/93 Phang Nga Road (bus station complex, across from City Food Bar). This popular restaurant offers good, very fresh Vietnamese and Thai food; stylish; air-conditioned. Open 10am-midnight.

Metropole Hotel 2nd floor, Surin Circle, Montri Road, Phuket Town. Tel: 215 050 Superb Thai/European luncheon buffet with dishes from Thailand's four regions and the best prices in town. An á la carte menu is also available from breakfast through dinner every day. Buffet starts at 11.30am.

Mae Porn 50/52 Phang Nga Road, Phuket Town. Tel: 212 106, a popular, centrally located meeting spot. Cafe-style or air-conditioning. Thai food, fresh fruit drinks and beer. Reasonably priced quick service. Open daily for lunch and dinner.

Somjit Noodles 214/6 Phuket Road, diagonally across the circle from Metropole Hotel. Great Hokkien soup (mee nam) and stir-fried noodles at great prices. Second from left of four corner shops. Open daily 9.30am-4pm.

Vegetarian Restaurant at the Chinese Temple end of Ranong Road, in Phuket Town. Open from mid-morning until 9.00pm daily, this canteen style restaurant serves entirely vegetarian Thai food. You can sample the most incredible array of tastes using vegetables, herbs, spices and soyabean protein, served with either brown or white rice, thick flat white rice noodles, yellow egg noodles or Chinese rice noodles. One of the best value, most nutritious and delicious meals you'll ever have.

Sip Gaeng on Yaowarat Road, near the Bangkok Phuket Hospital, serves khanom jin or Chinese rice noodles topped with your choice of curry, fresh herbs and pickles.

Rawai/Chalong

Nikita Bar (east side of the beach) is a favourite bar for sundowners, and serves food from the next door Rim Le Restaurant. Sala Loy Beach Resort is the favorite for local seafood - similar restaurants and barbecue stalls can befound down the entire length of the beach. Kan Eang 1 and 2 Seafood Restaurants situated at either end of Chalong Bay, serve superb Thai seafood in outdoor settings right on the water. Kan Eang is well-known throughout the country and is well patronised by local and visiting Thai people, indicating the quality of the food served here. Enjoy all sorts of tempting seafood, great oysters on the half-shell and haw mok (seafood mousse), a house specialty not to be missed.

Jimmy's Lighthouse Bar and Grill at Chalong Bay, serve American and Thai food, in very generous portions at reasonable prices. Enjoy a hearty breakfast, lunch or dinner looking out over the bay's yacht mooring area. Pool table with Thursday night tournaments, satellite TV -- this is the in-spot for yachties. Open daily 8am-midnight.

 

Rest of the Island

Panwa House Cape Panwa Hotel, Ao Makham Bay. Tel: 391 123. Picture yourself in a romantic mansion by the sea, then visit Panwa House, the hotel's beautifully-restored Sino-Portuguese mansion on the tip of Cape Panwa. Whether you dine indoors in the high-ceilinged rooms, windows open to the sea breeze, ceiling fans lazily turning above, or on the garden terrace, you're sure to enjoy a memorable feast of Thai tastes. Palm Court Grill Pearl Village Resort, Nai Yang Beach. Tel: 327 006. The specialty of the house -- tender prime beef -- is internationally-recognized for its excellence and always cooked just the way you like it. Good menu; pleasant ambiance. Reservations recommended. Open daily.

The Lake Restaurant Phuket Country Club, Kathu Valley. Tel: 321 365-71 Fine Continental dining with floor-to-ceiling views of the landscaped golf course and scenic hills. Relaxed ambiance. Free transport, four or more. Lunch and dinner daily.

Uncle Nan's Panwa Bay Village, on way to aquarium, Cape Panwa. Tel: 391 514 Enjoy delightfully tasty Italian food overlooking the bay above a unique boutique shopping centre. Good wine list; excellent homemade breads. Open daily for lunch and dinner.

Old Time Centre Thepkasattri Road (to airport) just out of Phuket Town. Tel: 221 533 Thai and Japanese restaurants, a grillhouse and a wonderful pub offering live blues and jazz music. Definitely worth a visit to one or more of the four.
