The Beach

The
focal point of Patong is it's long white sandy beach which curves
for 3 km alongside the waters of the Andaman Sea. During the height
of summer, the beach is lined with beach umbrellas and deck chairs
which are set up in the early mornings for the sun worshippers
who flock to spend entire days just lazing by the sea. Some areas
of the beach are cordoned off for swimmers, separating them from
where water sport activities are carried out. During the high
tourist season of November through to March, swimmers will find
the waters calm, flat and refreshing. Snorkelling at either end
of the beach is perfect at this time.
During
the months of August, September and October, climate changes create
a small surf which is significant enough to allow some surfing
to be carried out - particularly at the northern end of Patong
at what is known as Kalim Beach. During this monsoon time, swimmers
should be aware of tides and rips, however as the beach is well
patrolled, it is considered one of the safest beaches to swim
at during any time of the year.
The long beach is ideal for those who like to stroll along and
enjoy the breeze and the sun - during the day or later in the
cool of the late afternoon. A shady treelined nature strip divides
the beach from the heart of Patong, making it easy to divide your
time between the beach and Patong's throbbing township.
Watersport activities abound beachside - snorkelling, diving,
boat rides, parasailing - just to name a few.
Kalim Beach

At
the northern end of Patong, this beach is really a continuation
north of Patong's strand, from which it is separated by rocks.
A lesser-developed and private area, Kalim Beach is a good spot
for snorkelling, and through the monsoon months, for surfing.
The waters contain extensive coral reefs.
