Khao Lak Overview

Just
1 hour north of Phuket Island, in mainland Phang Nga province,
Khaolak is a beautiful area with long, long stretches of
sandy beach fringed by the mountains of the surrounding
national parks. Recently "discovered" it offers
nature lovers an unspoilt landscape of beaches, jungle covered
mountains, forested valleys, mangroves and estuaries. Development
has been careful with comfortable resorts and bungalows
blending into the scenery along the coastline. A great place
to relax.
What to Do...

More low-key than, Phuket, it's a place to take it easy,
read a book and get back to nature with a few comforts!
Go for long walks on the beach, take a nature tour and explore
the interior, go sightseeing by elephant, trek through the
jungle or go rafting along the along local rivers. Eco-Tours
leave every day.
Khao Lak is also a great jumping off point in the high
season for a trip to the Similan Islands, renowned for the
superb world class diving to be found there. Located further
north, the Similans are more accessible and day trips within
easy reach.
Where to Go...

The
Khao Lak area covers 3 national parks. The Thai Muang
National Park, formerly the site for tin mining activities,
includes some pretty waterfalls and Hat Thai Muang, or Turtle
Beach, where turtles lay their eggs from November to February.
Sri Phang Nga National Park, located in the Kuraburi
and Takua Pa districts, is about 60 kms from Khaolak. Worth
a drive, visitors can see tropical forest, spend a day hiking,
and even stay overnight in the park camping grounds.
Khaolak/Laem Ru National Park runs along the west
coast and offers mangroves and estuaries in addition to
the forest. Lots of exotic plants and wildlife. One of the
park's areas of interest is Kao Lak mountain, located beside
the sea, where a Chinese temple dedicated to the wizard
of the mountain is located.
Hat Khaolak... (Khaolak Beach)

The
coast along Khao Lak district stretches for miles with long
sandy beaches.
Although a well kept secret for many years, Hat Khao Lak,
where a few resorts are located, is now one of the places
to go for for those seeking the ultimate getaway. Quiet
with lots of space.....
Hat Thai Muang...

Located
in Thai Muang National Park at the southern end of Phang-nga
Province. Hat Thai Muang has 20 kilometres of lovely shoreline.
Aptly named "Turtle beach," sea turtles come to
lay their eggs from November to February. Species include
the leatherback turtle, although in recent years numbers
and sightings have reportedly been on the decrease.
Hat Bang Sak...

North
of Hat Khaolak in Tambon Bang Muang, this beach is a popular
spot for picnics with locals and there are several seafood
stalls set up. Not in the same league as Hat Khao Lak though.....
