What to See in Khao Lak

Put simply, Khao Lak is an exceptionally beautiful region and its beauty is by no means restricted to its beaches. Hills rise to the east of the beaches and contain a wonderful mixture of flora and fauna so it is no surprise that there are several national parks here.

There is good fishing in this area and during and just after the rainy season rafting is a spectacular and exciting attraction. Mountain biking is also challenging here and hikers will certainly not be disappointed. Snorkelling and watersports are popular along the coastline while spectacular dive sites lie to the west.

Waterfalls

There are many waterfalls in and around Khao Lak – in Khao Lak Lamru, Khao Lam Pi, Sri Phang Nga and Khao Sok national parks respectively, and they're all within easy driving distance of the beaches.

The total number of waterfalls in these parks is a staggering 19 so you certainly won't run out of watery sights to see. Always remember to take along mosquito repellent and good shoes as you'll sometimes need to trek through jungle to get to them. (Read more...)

Phang Nga Bay

About an hour's drive away lies the magic that is Phang Nga Bay. Limestone behemoths rise out of the sea while local fishermen go about their day's work in their longtail boats (so-called because of their long propeller shaft). Rent a longtail (about 1,000 baht) and simply head out to marvel at the sights.

Some of the bay's islands have collapsed in on themselves – the result of many years of rain erosion – and the insides are havens of sanctuary for the local fauna. The birdlife in this area is particularly colourful with Pacific egrets as well as sea eagles and kingfishers. (Read more...)

The Similans

This 9 island marine national park some 20 km west of Khao Lak has some of the most beautiful scenery to be found anywhere on the planet. Warm crystal clear seas with visability of 15m+ make snorkelling a joy with brightly coloured fish and coral everywhere.

The small, rocky, jungle capped islands have beaches of fine white sand and water that's more turquiose than elsewhere in Thailand. Daytrips run the six months of the year that the park is open (Nov-April). (Read more...)
