What to See in Chiang Mai
There are hundreds of interesting attractions in Chiang Mai. Aside from many temples in all directions, Chiang Mai has a very popular zoo, the only place in Thailand where a couple of pandas can be seen (on loan by the Chinese government). Enjoy a winding journey (157 bends!) to the top of Doi Suthep, considered a sacred area and a great place to enjoy cool mountain air along with spectacular views of the city.
Several museums trace the region's cultural and historic roots. The Museum of World Insects and Natural Wonders is another must-see. It contains more than 400 species of the Thai mosquito, amongst many other interesting exhibits. Chiang Mai has an endless list of natural wonders which, combined with the city's many cultural attractions, makes it a destination you need to allow lots of time for to explore and discover.
Old City Temples
A walk through the city of Chiang Mai is a delightful discovery, and you'll be amazed by the many beautiful temples located in the Old City area. Wat Phra Sing, Chiang Mai's most famous temple, was built in 14th Century as the centre of religion during the Lanna period. The Tree King Monument was a place of worship for the kings of this old kingdom.
Wat Chiang Man is the finest example of northern Thai architecture with its huge teak columns. Not to be missed, Tha Phae Gate is the traditional main entrance to the ancient moated city which has now become the busiest street in town. Chiang Mai Zoo
Chiang Mai Zoo is home to nearly 400 different species of animals. It's an 'open zoo' that covers 200 acres of land in the foothills of Doi Suthep. This is a unique chance to appreciate animals like Thai elephants, chimpanzees, hippos, tigers, rhinos and other animals out in the open (most of the time).
Do not miss visiting Chuang Chuang and Lin Hui, the only two pandas in Thailand (sent as goodwill gesture from China). Visitors can walk or take tram busses from one exhibition zone to another, or you can drive on your own by car (Read more...)
Museums in Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai has many fascinating museums, like the National Museum where the city's history is traced from the Lanna period to the present, and the Tribal Museum of Chiang Mai where hill-tribe costumes, tools, and art are displayed that reflects the history and lifestyle of these colourful people.
At the Dara Phirom Museum, a spouse of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), her outstanding collection of art, furniture and traditional northern clothing can be seen. The Museum of World Insects and Natural Wonders has exhibits of more than 400 species of the Thai mosquito and insects from around the world. Doi Suthep
Discover Chiang Rai's exquisite Golden Chedi at 1,688 metres above sea level at Doi Suthep, west of the city. Right at the top sits Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, one of the region's most revered temples and a place of pilgrimage for many Thais.
To reach the temple is somewhat of a hefty climb up 290 steps, but it's worth it for the views, the beauty of the temple and the cool mountain breeze. A winding road (157 bends!) snakes up through to the Doi Suthep National Park, considered a sacred area and an ideal place to wander around the verdant forest or to enjoy a picnic. (Read more...)
