Dining in Chiang Mai
From elegant Thai dining in teak pavilions along the banks of the Ping River to local street food, Chiang Mai is rich not only in heritage but also in places to eat. There are several famous dishes from this region, like 'Khantoke' dinner sets, comprising of a variety of Chiang Mai specialties like curries, sticky rice, a chili paste, and spicy local sausage. While enjoying their meal, guests will often be entertained with traditional dancing and live music.
What to Eat in Chiang Mai
A visit to Chiang Mai will not be complete without a 'Khantoke' dinner. Guests sit on the floor on cushions around a round woven or wooden table (a khantoke), laid with delicious northern Thai specialties like curries, sticky rice, spicy Chiang Mai sausage, 'nam phrik ong' (a green chilli paste accompaniment) and 'khao soi' (chicken, pork or beef curry soup with egg noodles).

Where to Eat in Chiang Mai
'Khantoke' dinners are available at a number of local hotels and at the Old Chiang Mai Cultural Centre. However, the most popular area to try this traditional set menu is at informal eateries along the Ping River. Enjoy the breezy air by the river and the delightful entertainment. It's an excellent introduction to northern food and culture.
Street food is mainly available around Tha Phae Gate (Old City); delicious and very affordable. Somphet Market is open 24 hours and a good place to head to for some unusual delicacies like fried bugs.
