One of the most fascinating areas of Bangkok. Traditionally the
hub of this great city, the river reflects the historical and economic
changes which have taken place since Bangkok was first founded.
Staying on the river is a delight - a constantly changing scene
with taxi boats gently transporting passengers, rice barges being
towed to nearby warehouses, and local trading boats. A reminder
that the Chao Praya river still continues in the traditional way,
providing a main artery for trade, commerce and transport as it
always has done.
Today, it's also becoming an area for prime real estate development
with upmarket hotels like the Shangri-La and the Sheraton joining
some of the more established hotels like the Oriental and the Menam,
on both sides of the river, especially near Bangkrak and Thon Buri.

Close to this part of the river, is Sanam Luang - the political
capital of Bangkok which contains many historic landmarks and buildings,
including the Grand Palace. The area remains relatively free of
modern architecture and gives a better feel for "old Bangkok."
Close by is Banglamphu, parallel to the river, it's where
backpackers and long term travellers head to for cheap accommodation,
local food and video cafes. Cheap and touristy in an alternative
kind of way.
